It has long been a puzzle as to whether Nguashi Ntimbo belongs in this page. The fact that Festival added "du Zaire" to their name does suggest an ex-pat band. However Orch Sentima's "Citoyen" was recorded in Kinshasa inand other solo work was apparently recorded in Belgium or the Congo.

He never played live shows in Nairobi or anywhere in Kenya. I am sure some of the master tapes he used to bring were illegally brought to Kenya. I am also wondering if he himself participated on singing all those songs.
He knew a little Swahili. We met him in Instagram studios, twice, when he was recording Simba Wanyika in the studio and time to rest for lunch. We never met him city center: the rumors was that he was coming to Kenya to sell songs of his colleagues without agreement and money was also eating alone. I don't know if this was true. Many times like old man Sam Mangwana they were coming in Nairobi they will be more free than this brother. Mangwana recorded at Instagram studios in Nairobi with a big band of local people.

I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya na wengine.
I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya roho zetu zi radhi kuweka akiba lakini hali halisi inakataa.
Kilonzo's talents as a musician soon won him renown.
As far as I can tell, these compilations are all out of print. Well before his time, Kakai Kilonzo passed away in after a brief illness. His presence in the Kenyan music scene is sorely missed. Many years ago I dubbed onto 10" tape reels Mwana Rudi Nyumbani Pt.
I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya number of 45s by Kakai Kilonzo and the Kilimambogos, and was recently able to digitize them. None of these are on any of the above-referenced pressings. Except for "Christmas Day," which is in Swahili, these records are all in Kamba. For the most part I have no idea Mwana Rudi Nyumbani Pt. I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya the lyrics are about, but I presume that they deal with the usual subjects of Kenyan popular music: Family matters, love and harvests.
It is benga, the music of Kakai Kilonzo and artists like him, that is the true voice of Kenya's rural majority - blunt and straightforward, real Kenyan "country music. Download the songs in this post as a zipped file here. As a follow-up to my earlier post From Congo to Kenya Pt. Like that post, this one is focused on the early s. For some time I had wondered who possessed the soulful voice that featured on so many 45s issued during the '80s in Kenya by such disparate groups as the Kenya Blue Stars and Bana Ngenge.
Was it the same person? In he hooked up with Fataki Lokassa and a number of other Congolese exiles in Uganda to form Bana Ngnege, which seems to have undergone a number of permutations and name changes over the years. His father was Vicky Longomba, a founding member of OK Jazzand his brother Awilo Longombais one of the biggest stars of contemporary Congo music.
His sojourn there lasted only three months, after which he left for stints with Boma Liwanza and Super Mazembe. Sadly, Lovy Longomba died in an auto accident in Tanzania in Kasule's translation in turn V.C. (Gloria Domini) - Moonspell - Monsters Of Rock (The Very Best Of Metal) the basis for Mwana Rudi Nyumbani Pt.
I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya Bel's version of the song. I understand Sammy Kasule is presently living in Stockholm. The album may be purchased online here. Have you seen Alastair Johnston's website Muzikifan?
I haven't seen it yet, but it's an obvious labor of love, and a must-have for any African music fan. You can get it through the site. As of yet there doesn't seem to be any distribution through Amazon or Sternsbut hopefully there soon will be. But that's not what this post is about. It turns out I have a fair number of tracks by some of these musicians, so I thought it would be worthwhile to give them a spin. Probably the most influential of these artists was Baba Gastonwhose picture is at the top of this post, and who ended up in Dar-es-Salaam with his Orchestre Baba Nationale inmoving to Nairobi four years later.
Gaston's various orchestras comprised a veritable university of East African music owing to the numerous musicians who passed through before going on to join or establish other outfits, Mwana Rudi Nyumbani Pt. I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya them Les Mangalepa.
Here are some 45s from Gaston's career in East Africa. Jimmy Monimambo, who features in "Amba," was one of three outstanding vocalists in Orchestra Shika-Shika, the others being Moreno Batamba and Vicky "Lovy" Longomba, who will be discussed in a future post. I'll be discussing more Congo musicians in East Africa in a future post.
I've written here before that twenty years ago I accumulated an archive of about 24 hours worth of East African music on 10" tape reels that I finally got around to digitizing a year and a half ago.
These records were loaned to me by friends from that part of the world, most of whom have moved on to other cities, and cover a gamut of languages and styles. Digitizing this material was fairly straightforward, but actually processing, organizing and making sense of the collection has been a daunting task, one that I've pursued in whatever spare time I've had.
It's complicated by the fact that the various genres and artists are scattered among the tapes willy-nilly. Some of the more refreshing of these tracks have been the ones recorded by Kamba musicians.
The Akamba, related to the Kikuyu, are said to number about four million and live in the south-central region of Kenya Canibal Culture - Various - The Soundtrack To Change The World! east of Nairobi refer to the map on the right; click to enlarge.
While contemporary Kamba music is often labeled " Benga " or " Cavacha ," it's characterized by its relative simplicity and straightforwardness. Although distinctive melodies distinguish Kamba pop from other styles of benga, there are other special Kamba features. One is the delicate, flowing, merry-go-round-like rythm guitar that underlies many Kamba arrangements. While the primary guitar plays chords in the lower range, the second guitar plays a fast pattern of notes that mesh with the rest of the instrumentation to fill in the holes.
It turns out that Mwana Rudi Nyumbani Pt. I - Various - Uvivu Mbaya have quite a few tracks by the Kilimambogos, almost none of which are on the two recent compilations Best of Kakai Vol. Tunes by various other Kamba musicians most recorded around add up to about three hours' worth of music, and the ones I'm posting here are a representative sample. If you like these I'll be happy to post more in the future.
Back in the early '80s Kenya was under the sway of the imported Congolese musicians, Virunga, Baba Gaston and the like, and the various Swahili "big bands" like Mlimani Park and the Wanyika groups. Kamba music and Where Do I Go Now - Big Generator - The Unreleased other "vernacular" styles were part of an older, less-sophisticated tradition that had its roots in the '60s and earlier, as described by John Storm Roberts in the liner notes to his compilation Before Benga Vol.
I soon found that this was very much a people's music. But for the majority of Kenyans whose English was functional at best, they reflected day-to-day life with a plain-man exuberance that was very like their audience: lacking the glamour of West or Central Africa, but in their own way wholly admirable. In this light I regret that I've been unable to find anyone to translate the lyrics of these records for us.
I'm sure they would be even more pleasurable if we knew what they were about! As TO GOD BE THE GLORY - Sunday Saxes - Hymns of Fanny Crosby (Vinyl, Album) is there's plenty of wonderful singing and guitar-picking for our musical enjoyment.
